Sightings for February

There was just one Whooper Swan at St. Aidan’s on 3rd, with over 300 Pink-footed Geese passing through on 5th. Nine Tundra Bean Geese were on the ridge and furrow on 7th, with two Russian White-fronted Geese there on 17th and nine from 22nd. The Scaup at Skelton Lake and Long-tailed Duck on Lemonroyd Lake were present throughout, with two redhead Smew at Skelton Lake on 9th and a pair on Lemonroyd Lake on 10th.

The Great White Egret dropped in (from Fairburn Ings) on a few days. A Green Sandpiper was seen between the filter beds at Lemonroyd WWTW on a few days. Gulls were disappointing, with just one Iceland on 13th and one Glaucous on 19th, with an adult Kittiwake at Skelton Lake on 5th. A couple of Short-eared Owls continued to show on the hillside. After five Waxwings in Swillington village on 11th, numbers increased to about 70 on 26th. A Cetti’s Warbler was heard on 14th, with the Siberian Chiffchaff last seen on 3rd. A Marsh Tit was in Temple Newsam on 6th.
