UPDATES & SUMMARY.

Saturday 18th February.

Thirty one Waxwings in Swillington Village today allowed five listers the chance of adding this species after missing out on last weeks birds, the lucky five were, DAH, AR, JB, PW, GR. It was also a Swilly life tick for JB. A few more updates GR is now on 101 With the addition of Bean Goose, Great White Egret, Redshank and today’s Waxwing. PW also added Little Owl, Sparrowhawk and Waxwing and is catching the leaders with 73 species now seen.

Thursday 16th February.

Two updates, REL added Waxwing which takes his total to 110, JDM also saw the flyover Waxwings plus Green Woodpecker & Skylark taking him onto 96.

Wednesday 15th February.

Both league tables updated with information received, including Waxwings, Bean Geese, Smew, Cettis Warbler, plus a few other additions.

Todays news is JB added Treecreeper , JMS added Green Sandpiper he saw at the filter beds. PW added six species and is now on 70.

Tuesday 14th February.

A new bird for the year a Cettis Warbler was heard but not seen in the old Ash ponds area, ( Biffa tip). Tho the bird will count on the year list it cannot be claimed in the Swilly patch Challenge as the bird needs to be seen.

Bubo website is now back online and I have updated the totals table with all the latest information received, I will update the species seen list over the next few days.

Sunday 12th February.

On a cold wet miserable day the Duck counters and a few listers were out braving the weather but there was very little reward apart from the Long Tailed Duck & the Black Necked Grebe, yesterday’s Waxwings seem to have moved on with no further sign since late morning yesterday.

Bubo website is still down.

Saturday 11th February.

Five Waxwings found by JM in Swillington village takes the year total up to 116. Five other listers managed to connect with the birds before they disappeared they are, GYL, DIH, RDH, JMS & PRM, see above table for their totals.

Out of the 116 species recorded this year PRM is missing just three species Bewicks Swan, Whooper Swan and Tawny Owl the latter two should be quite easy additions.

Bubo website is still down so sorry if your totals are incorrect, for those not on Bubo if your totals are incorrect please let me know the species you have seen.

Friday 10th February.

No new birds for the year were found today, but after yesterdays Redhead Smews which seemingly had departed overnight two different Smews a male and female were found on Lemonroyd lake by PRM.

The Bubo website is still down at time of posting so i am still unable to update any additions that may have been added on there.

Thursday 9th February.

Another new species for the year were a couple of Redhead Smew which were found again by Golden balls PRM this morning at Skelton lake, he also added LBBG taking him onto 112. Other listers who managed to see the Smew are, REL, DAH, JB, GR, GYL, JDM, DIH, PGC, JMS, DM, no further information received. Year total 115.

It seems there is a Problem with the Bubo website at the moment, so I have just added what I know who has seen certain species over the last few days to your totals, I will amend later when Bubo is back online if there are anymore additions you may have added.

Wednesday 8th February.

No news today on the Bean Geese and only a couple of updates received from DM who added Willow Tit taking him onto 93, also JP added Peregrine & Redwing and is now on 84.

Some news from the Members life list page and it’s Well Done to RDH who with the addition of Bean Goose has now seen his 200th species in the recording area. ( see page for a few more updates also). ( If anyone has a new species could you please let me know then i can add it onto your list, thanks).

Tuesday 7th February.

There’s no stopping PRM on his hot run of form finding new birds for the year, he struck again today finding nine Tundra Bean Geese on the ridge n furrow taking the year list to 113 and his total up to 110. Several other listers managed to see the Geese before they flew off early evening, DAH, REL, JB, GYL, DIH, RDH, still waiting for a few updates from other listers if they managed to see the birds, the Great White Egret put in another appearance again this afternoon.

News just received the Swans photographed in January have been accepted as Bewick Swans thus increasing the year list to 114.

Monday 6th February.

Two new species for the year both found by PRM the first a Kittiwake at Skelton lake on Sunday, then a Marsh Tit in Temple Newsam today. Also the Great White Egret turned up on the ridge n furrow from it’s base at Fairburn on Sunday allowing several listers the chance of finally adding it onto their lists. Several listers saw the Kittiwake but at time of posting only PRM has seen the Marsh Tit that i know of.

There has been several updates since i last posted, PRM has added three species taking him onto 109. DAH up two to 108. GYL also up two to 107. JMS has added three species and is now on 105.  DIH also up two with Kittiwake & GWE 104. JB up three to 104. RDH up two to 103. JM up seven species taking him onto 101. Most of the above listers added both the Kittiwake & GWE.

No further updates received. The above updates have not yet been added onto the species seen list.

Thursday 2nd February.

Eight updates received , PRM adds water rail 106. DAH adds Grey Partridge & Bittern 106 . JMS adds three species Jack Snipe being one of them, 101. Also JB & RDH add one species taking them onto 101, PGC added five species taking him onto 95, DM adds Little Owl and is now on 92. JP adds three species since his last update taking him onto 82. These updates have not yet been added to the species seen list below, will amend later. I’m just off to the SIBG AGM for a kip zzzzzz.

.

Saturday 31st December.

One last update, PRM with the last tick of 2016 added a Barn Owl taking his total to 160.

There was no last minute additions by the top two, with both of them still on site as the last light of 2016 finally faded away so both DIH & GYL finish level on 166 species seen for the year, Congratulations .

So we all begin again tomorrow lets hope for a Bird filled year with a few more rarities. Here are a few of the birds that have been recorded in recent years but were missing from this years list :-  Ruddy Duck, Red Crested Pochard, Smew, Ring Ouzel, Redstart, Quail, Waxwing, Mealy Redpoll, Spoonbill. For more omissions see Previous Years Sightings Page.

Happy New Year.

It’s getting to that time of the year in deciding if we are carrying on next year with the Swilly listers patch challenge or has it run it’s course and needs retiring ? Please let me know your thoughts, I’m happy to carry on with this blog maybe in a different format but if anyone wants to take over I would be happy to step aside. Sorry for all the incorrect punctuation marks spelling mistakes and bad English at times over the last few years. That reminds me am i proof reading the report again for next year ?
