UPDATES & SUMMARY.

Thursday 17th August.

The Osprey was over the reserve yesterday and today allowing a few listers the chance of adding it onto their lists, PGC now on 145, DAH now on 162, and GYL also on 162. No further news received at time of posting.

Tuesday 15th August.

An Osprey over the reserve this afternoon would have been a year tick for some listers , but at the moment no news received so far if any listers managed to see the bird.

A few updates, PW has added five species to his list since his last update in May taking his total to 104. JP added the Red Crested Pochard last week which takes him onto 148. GYL added Greenshank yesterday taking his total to 161.

Sunday 13th August.

Two updates received, GR added the Red Crested Pochard taking him onto 155. JMS finally added today’s Common Scoter which takes him onto 162.

Thursday 10th August.

Several updates received, REL & JMS added the Red Crested Pochard taking their totals to 161. DAH added Green Sandpiper taking his total to 161. JB added Hobby which takes him onto 159. DIH added two species today a very showy Water Rail and a Hobby which takes his total to 165. The Water Rail was seen again later by GYL taking his total to 160.

No Escape list’s received so  far !!!!!!!!!!!!

Sunday 6th August.

PRM has sent a list of a few more Escapes to add to the birds mentioned in Saturdays post.

Other birds for the ‘Escape’ list
African Firefinch, Alexandrine Parakeet, Bahama Pintail, Chestnut Teal, Cockatiel, Eagle Owl, Chilean Flamingo, Guineafowl, Masked Lovebird, Peafowl, Red-billed Teal, Ross’s Goose, Sacred Ibis, Sulphur-crested Cockatoo.

Saturday 5th August.

Still very quiet on the reserve but for those of you who keep a Plastic list ( Escapes) a Wood Duck was on the river again near Caroline bridge. Maybe we could start a Plastic life list league table anyone up for it ? Without a full check here are some of my Escaped/ Dubious origin species, Buff Necked Ibis, Bar headed Goose, Chiloe Wigeon, Ruddy Shelduck, White Stork, Ring Necked Parakeet, Budgerigar, Harris Hawk, Blue Phased Snow Goose, Black Swan, Muscovy Duck, Chinese Swan Goose, might be one or two more that have slipped my mind at the moment.

Wednesday 2nd August.

After a twelve day gap and a surprise to all the Caspian Tern returned this morning onto Astley Lake, it was last seen in Wales on the 24th July so where has it been since ?. The happiest lister has got to be REL who was away on holiday when the Tern was here last Month and missed it by a day on his return, so i bet he could not believe it when news broke of the birds return, it takes his total to 160. Another update DM added Whinchat & Black Tailed Godwit yesterday taking his total to 142.

Tuesday 1st August.

Four new species for the year were seen in July, Brent Goose, White Winged Black Tern, Redstart and the Star of the month and probably the year was a Caspian Tern. The year list now stands at 175 subject to acceptance of a few species.

The above Totals Table has been updated and is now in order of rank, the Species seen list is still the same with no additions since the last update on the 21st July. (No updates received since).

Saturday 29th July.

Sorry for the lack of post’s but as you can gather there has been very little to report. The best is 3 Whinchat’s near the Trailer Gate area , a Garganey or two on Astley and the moulting long staying Black Tern, a juvenile Cuckoo was a good sighting otherwise very quiet, hopefully a few Waders will start to drop in once the mud starts showing on the Reedbeds now that some of the boards have been removed, Wood Sands & Little Stints are beginning to appear at other sites and hopefully something a bit rarer will turn up on the Reedbed mud in the shape of an American wader.

Sunday 23rd July.

Just one update received DM has added hobby and Garganey taking his total to 140. Most listers still need Mandarin Duck for their year lists and one was photographed on Wednesday and another was reported today on the river but there was no further sign of todays bird after the initial report, but there is still a good chance the bird is still present hiding away somewhere on the river.

Friday 21st July.

A update from Wednesday a Wood Sandpiper was photographed  by D McMahon in the main lake area so this takes the year list to 175, no lister’s saw this bird and there was no further sighting of the bird the following day.

It looks like the Caspian Tern has departed with no sign today at time of posting.

The Species seen list has been updated with Caspian Tern , White Winged Black Tern, Redstart & Brent Goose. (See below for the Species seen list).

The Members Life list Table has also been updated with the Caspian Tern added plus a few other updates. ( See the Members Life List Page).

Wednesday 19th July.

The Caspian Tern delighted the crowds that turned up to see the bird today, the day started early for some (DIH) at first light when the Tern was seen to be still present, the first message was received at 05:25 that the bird had flown from Astley towards the main Bay, it was located again on the lagoon islands then it gave everyone a fright when news that it was flying towards Fairburn, thankfully the bird had sense and it rested up on the shingle island near the new sluice. It later returned to Astley and apart from a sortie down to the main lake late morning the bird remained on Astley for most of the day. Those listers who missed the bird yesterday were delighted that the bird was still present and all who came down managed to see the bird, JB, GR, DM, PGC, JMS, JM, JP, JMD.  One member who was having a sabbatical in his Tin Hut at Filey dashed back in the morning to tick the bird, he then returned to Filey to continue his sabbatical, dedication or blind panic.

Tuesday 18th July.

Not just a new Bird for the year but a new Bird for the recording area was found today a Caspian Tern was on Astley lake for about Half an hour before it flew West and was not seen again despite searching, several listers & members managed to see the bird before it departed, a couple of them even abandoned their desks at work to see the bird and one member was dragged out of his bed having being working nights, at least he managed to see the bird and was grateful that i had got him up, sadly a few listers and members just missed the bird. The listers that saw the bird were PRM the finder, DAH, DIH, AR, GYL, RDH. I don’t think any other listers saw the bird, will amend later if so. Several Members also saw the bird they were, AJR, INS, GPKL, JW. This takes the year list to 174. I will update the members life list totals in a few days time. Also a “footnote” member Geoff Haigh won the Swillington ings Sweep for predicting the next new bird for the area, they say money goes to money.

Also today while looking for the Caspian Tern at Skelton, member Jim Welford found a juvenile Redstart which was a welcome find after one was seen in May by a visitor with no listers seeing this bird at the time. Today’s bird was seen by DIH, PRM, AR, GYL, JB, if any other lister has seen the bird i will update tomorrow when i have further details.

I have updated the totals table above with the information i have at the moment at time of posting.(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((.

2016 Table Below.

Saturday 31st December.

One last update, PRM with the last tick of 2016 added a Barn Owl taking his total to 160.

There was no last minute additions by the top two, with both of them still on site as the last light of 2016 finally faded away so both DIH & GYL finish level on 166 species seen for the year, Congratulations .

So we all begin again tomorrow lets hope for a Bird filled year with a few more rarities. Here are a few of the birds that have been recorded in recent years but were missing from this years list :-  Ruddy Duck, Red Crested Pochard, Smew, Ring Ouzel, Redstart, Quail, Waxwing, Mealy Redpoll, Spoonbill. For more omissions see Previous Years Sightings Page.

Happy New Year.

It’s getting to that time of the year in deciding if we are carrying on next year with the Swilly listers patch challenge or has it run it’s course and needs retiring ? Please let me know your thoughts, I’m happy to carry on with this blog maybe in a different format but if anyone wants to take over I would be happy to step aside. Sorry for all the incorrect punctuation marks spelling mistakes and bad English at times over the last few years. That reminds me am i proof reading the report again for next year ?
