UPDATES & SUMMARY.

Sunday 21st May.

Still very quiet this weekend on site with just a Grey Plover a few Turnstones and Sanderlings present being the highlights. Just two updates received, REL finally added Bearded Tit onto his list taking him onto 157. RDH added Sanderling taking him onto 150, good effort from a full time worker. One omission was Garganey from JBs list, with this addition he is now on 152.

Friday 19th May.

Very quiet at the moment so sorry for lack of posts this week, just three updates received, DM added three more species taking him onto 131. GYL & DAH both added Bearded Tit today. Surprised there has been no further sightings of the Spotted Flycatcher since Sunday as far as i’m aware, it’s probably down to the weather or the bird was just passing through or located to a different area.

Monday 15th May.

The Species seen list has been updated with the latest information received, (see below). Sanderling, Osprey, Spotted Redshank, Ring Ouzel, Spotted Flycatcher & Redstart are new birds for May.  The Redstart reported by a visitor was accepted by the Rarities committee on a Majority decision.  The Spoonbill returned in May after a brief visit in April allowing all the listers the chance of adding this species onto their lists. No updates received today at time of posting.

Sunday 14th May.

Spotted Flycatcher in Temple Newsam this afternoon was new for the year, it was found by DIH, at time of posting i have no further news if any other lister saw the bird. RDH added Turnstone today taking his total to 150. Otherwise a fairly quiet weekend.

Friday 12th May.

A male Redstart was claimed on Wednesday afternoon, it was seen on the hillside in the hawthorn hedge that runs up the hillside on the northern side of the hill opposite Old Astley lane entrance, the details were emailed to the recorder, we now await a decision from the rarities committee on if the claim will be accepted.

Several updates received – AR has added four more onto his list which takes him onto 155.  GR has added two species Greenshank & Swift which takes him onto 148.  DM back from climbing walls in Greece has added six species and is now on 128.  RM has added another two and his total is now 115.  PW needs another species which will see him make the magic 100 mark.

Wednesday 10th May.

Another Sanderling today also a Grey Plover and the summer/ breeding Plumaged Spoonbill were todays highlights, several listers caught up with the Sanderling. Two of those who added the Sanderling were –  JP who has added four species since his last update taking his total to 144. Also PGC added two species today and he is now on 140.

Tuesday 9th May.

Fairly quiet at the moment, hopefully with the wind changing direction and higher temperatures  for a day or two a bit more of a passage will occur. The Spoonbill is still present a few Whinchats, Turnstones and two Greenshanks have had a few listers catching up with these species that need them. JDM added four species today taking his total to 134.

Sunday 7th May.

A female Ring Ouzel seen in flight yesterday by REL was the 165th species for the year. Other updates from yesterday was PRM, DIH, RDH, all added Cuckoo onto their lists. With this addition PRM is now on 160. REL is on 156. DIH is now on 155. No further updates received at time of posting.

Friday 5th May.

No new birds found today but a second Tree Pipit for the year that was seen well by PRM, GYL was a welcome addition to their lists. JDM added the spoonbill today taking his total to 130. PW added Swift & Whitethroat which takes him onto 95.

Just an update on the members life list page the Spoonbill is a new bird for the site for JB, PGC, PW, JDM.

Thursday 4th May.

Number 164 for the year a Summer Plumaged Spotted Redshank was found in the main Lake area this morning by Mr V Lister, Four other Listers managed to see this bird before it flew off west after briefly landing on Astley lake, PRM, REL, DIH & RDH.

Another bonus today was a Spoonbill seen flying into Black pipe bay by (PGC, AR),  it later flew again onto the ridge n furrow where it settled down in a marshy area surrounded by reeds and willow, the bird was only visible from high on the hillside overlooking the R n F. Several listers on site all managed to see the bird as did a few more later in the day. (See above table for the latest totals). This species was also a Swilly life tick for one man and his dog (JB).

A report of a Ring Ouzel from a visiting birder had several listers looking for the bird but there was no further sign later of this species. ( see post on the sightings page by PRM).

Tuesday 2nd May.

Both tables have been updated with all additions from information received.

The year list now stands at 163. At the end of April the total recorded species was 161, this is the highest total ever up to the end of April, the previous highest was 158 in 2013.

Twenty five new species for the year were recorded in April, the highest ever count for April was 32 in 2013/15.  The new species recorded in April were,– Garganey, House Martin, Reed Warbler, Mandarin Duck, Cuckoo, Grasshopper Warbler, Yellow wagtail, Little Gull, Greenshank, Common Sandpiper, Lesser Whitethroat, Sedge Warbler, Whitethroat, Whimbrel, Swift, Arctic Tern, Garden Warbler, Turnstone, Med Gull, Whinchat, Hobby, Black Tern, Bar Tailed Godwit, Tree Pipit, Spoonbill.

Monday 1st May.

Another good day yielded two more new species which were both found by PRM, the first was a Sanderling on Astley, and for those luckily to be in the hide viewing the afore mentioned bird a big reward was an Osprey flying over west, PRM, RDH, DIH, REL, GR were the lucky few who saw this bird, one unlucky lister young JDM had gone down warbler alley looking for Garden Warbler and missed the Osprey by seconds, but he still had a good day with another nine species which takes him onto 129.

Hopefully the species seen list will be updated tomorrow, i have already updated several listers lists today and just have a few more to do.

.

Saturday 31st December.

One last update, PRM with the last tick of 2016 added a Barn Owl taking his total to 160.

There was no last minute additions by the top two, with both of them still on site as the last light of 2016 finally faded away so both DIH & GYL finish level on 166 species seen for the year, Congratulations .

So we all begin again tomorrow lets hope for a Bird filled year with a few more rarities. Here are a few of the birds that have been recorded in recent years but were missing from this years list :-  Ruddy Duck, Red Crested Pochard, Smew, Ring Ouzel, Redstart, Quail, Waxwing, Mealy Redpoll, Spoonbill. For more omissions see Previous Years Sightings Page.

Happy New Year.

It’s getting to that time of the year in deciding if we are carrying on next year with the Swilly listers patch challenge or has it run it’s course and needs retiring ? Please let me know your thoughts, I’m happy to carry on with this blog maybe in a different format but if anyone wants to take over I would be happy to step aside. Sorry for all the incorrect punctuation marks spelling mistakes and bad English at times over the last few years. That reminds me am i proof reading the report again for next year ?
